Background of the Study

Long working hours can lead to burnout, fatigue, and decreased performance among healthcare workers, including oncology nurses. In the high-stress environment of oncology care, where nurses are responsible for managing complex treatments and providing emotional support to patients, long working hours may further exacerbate stress and negatively impact the quality of care. This study will investigate the effects of long working hours on the performance of oncology nurses at Federal Medical Centre (FMC), Owerri, Imo State.

Statement of the Problem

Oncology nurses work in demanding environments, and long working hours are common in many healthcare settings. However, prolonged working hours can lead to physical and mental exhaustion, which may affect nursing performance and patient care. The effects of long working hours on oncology nurses’ performance at FMC Owerri have not been well studied. This study will explore how working extended shifts influences the ability of oncology nurses to provide optimal care.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To assess the effects of long working hours on the performance of oncology nurses at FMC Owerri.
  2. To explore how long working hours affect the quality of care provided to oncology patients.
  3. To identify strategies to mitigate the negative effects of long working hours on nursing performance.

Research Questions

  1. How do long working hours affect the performance of oncology nurses at FMC Owerri?
  2. What are the impacts of long working hours on the quality of care provided to oncology patients?
  3. What strategies can be implemented to mitigate the negative effects of long working hours on oncology nurses’ performance?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Long working hours negatively affect the performance of oncology nurses at FMC Owerri.
  2. Long working hours lead to a decrease in the quality of care provided to oncology patients.
  3. Implementing strategies such as shift rotation or increased support staff will improve the performance of oncology nurses.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on oncology nurses at Federal Medical Centre, Owerri, Imo State. Limitations include the reliance on self-reported data and potential variability in the working conditions of nurses.

Definitions of Terms
